SUPPORTING CAREGIVERS

“There are only four kinds of people in this world – those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will need caregivers.”

– Rosalynn Carter, Former First Lady of the United States

This quote from Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter is a universal truth that touches every single one of us. So much so, that she founded the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers over 35 years ago to promote caregivers’ health, strength, and resilience.

As Doulas, we can provide such support and relief to caregivers. Relatively simple things, like holding down the fort while they run to the grocery store or get a manicure and pedicure or a much-needed massage. And more challenging things, like navigating through difficult family dynamics and anticipatory grief.

This 20-minute video, I am a Caregiver, offers honest insights into what it’s really like to be a caregiver to a loved one.

As you watch the video, please reflect on these questions:

What are some challenges caregivers face?

What are some examples of caregiver self care?

As a Doula, what kinds of services can you provide to help support caregivers?

Families are burdened with care for their loved one, and some have to stop working. Some have to cut back on work. When you go into folks’ homes, be mindful that caregivers are usually under so much stress, not just physically and emotionally, but financially, as well.

And maybe the sick individual was the breadwinner. Think of this scenario:  Mom gets a Social Security check. Daughter and her family move in to take care of mom. When mom dies, the money goes away, and we see a lot of fear. These families are scared. As Doulas, we can empathize and show that we care. And we can look for resources that might assist.
